BOTH IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH. HAVE ATTEMPTED CONTACT
OVER LAST THREE DAYS AND RENEWED EFFORTS TODAY.
MESSAGE READS :
THlS IS A STAFF OFFICER OF THE BRITISH MILITARY
HEADQUARTERS SPEAKING .
OUR PURPOSE IN CONTACTING YOU IS PRIMARILY Y
HUMANITARIAN BECAUSE WE ARE AWARE THAT THERE ARE
STILL MANY CIVILIANS LIVING IN PORT STANLEY.
HOWEVER WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE DESTRUCTION OF THE
ARGENTINE FORCES IN STANLEY WOULD NOT BE IN THE
INTEREST OF UK BECAUSE WHICHEVER WAY THE WAR
ULTIMATELY GOES, WE RECOGNIZE THE LONG TERM
IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUING OUR LONG STANDING
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ARGENTINE.
WE WISH TO DISCUSS AT THIS MOMENT THE SAVING OF LIVES,
BOTH BRITISH, FALKLANDER AND ARGENTINE PURELY IN THE
BATTLE OF STANLEY .THE POSITION OF THE ARGENTINE
FORCES NOW IS HOPELESS. YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY THE
BRITISH FORCES ON ALL SIDES ON THE GROUND, AT SEA, AND
COMPLETELY DOMINATED IN THE AIR. THERE IS NOWHERE
THAT IS NOT COVERED BY BRITISH ARTILLERY FIRE.
THERE IS LITTLE POINT IN YOUR CONTINUING THE STRUGGLE.
A DECISION TO GIVE UP SHOULD BE MADE NOW. THIS IS NO
REFLECTION ON THE BRA VERY OR SKILL OF YOUR SOLDIERS.
HOWEVER YOU ARE WITHOUT RE-SUPPLY OF AMMUNITION,
YOU HAVE LOST CONSIDERABLE QUANTITIES OF WEAPONS
AND WE HAVE CAPTURED MANY PRISONERS. YOU ARE
UNABLE TO PREVENT THESE LOSSES CONTINUING. YOU HAVE
LOST ALL THE HIGH GROUND AROUND STANLEY.
WE BELIEVE THAT A MEETING SHOULD NOW TAKE PLACE OR
A LINK KEPT OPEN BETWEEN THE TWO OPPOSING FORCES.
IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE AND THERE IS
UNNECESSARY BLOODSHED IN PORT STANLEY , THE WORLD
WILL JUDGE YOU ACCORDINGLY .
WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS HAS
DESIGNATED THE STONE BUILT CATHEDRAL AS A REFUGE
AND NEUTRAL ZONE FOR CIVILIANS. WE ACKNOWLEDGE
THIS.MESSAGE ENDSBT

Apparently it takes 24 days form the Falklands to Devonport. Galteari has been ousted . Talk of who is to remain as part of "upkeep of naval presence" in the area. Looks like four weeks of AMP is a bit on the short side Sea Wolf is duff one or two other things are non to healthy either.

20 /6 /82 Letter from one of the Glasgow's Mums

Brighton
20.6.82

Dear Sir
I have just returned from Portsmouth where I took part in the 'welcome home' for the Glasgow
My son and his friends were
'choked' at the terrific welcome they received but they insisted they were no heroes and told us that to their minds the ship they had to thank was the 'Brilliant' they were full of praise for your actions and said you had lived up to your name.

On behalf of all the lads , mothers, wives , children etc. of the Glasgow I would like to say 'Thank You' for making it possible for them to come home .

'Brilliant was Brilliant was what we heard time and time again

Please thank all your team for this good work

Yours very Sincerely

A 'Task Force Mother'

A THE END, WE ARE ON OUR WAY HOME

There will be some of the lads reading this and thinking I don't remember that or I didn't know that happened, as I did when I read some of the diary that Dave and the other boy's had written. All I can say is, I put down what I thought and felt at the time, nothing more, and nothing less.

A quarter of the ships company leave at Ascension to fly home

Letter Home (Bill Oddy)

Dear Mum Dad Elaine Diana Sandra
If you receive another letter off me , Im not on my way home but hopefully we are setting off in the next couple of days. It takes 10 days to get to Ascension where I will be flying home from to Brieze Norton. Julie now lives near there so I will pick her up and skidaddle up 2 6 Might in fact probably will stop off at Blackpool for a day. When I get the rest of my leave Ill see Nan and Grandpa for a few days. The reason we are flying home is that when the ship gets back to Guz the rest of the crew will get 10 days leave. 25% or there abouts are flying off.

Received the parcel of goodies Caviar good god Ill never live it down, still I shared it out nobody can say stokers don't have class. They were delicious especially the plums in chocolate. Mind you I will have to go on a diet now. Thanks not thanks for the diet thanks for the goodies it sure brightens life up. This morning Im flying over to the Hermes to get these damm teeth fixed, two fillings have fallen out and I need a new one It should be quite an experience Ive never flown in a chopper before.

Twelve days before this lark seemed ages but now it's a mere moment. The worst part is this imposed celibacy no not really, being away form home is the worst but it sure is aggrevating.

Well we are now back in control just hope the argies don't try anything else I suppose the Navy has proved it can do its job a lot of rethinking about the dockyard will have to take place, the quick conversion of merchant ships was an important factor in this. Ill be able to spin a few dits to my grandchildren anyway. Yahoo 2 weeks and I could be home definitely good news. Ill get this in the post quickly.

Love David
